Besides burning off excess fat and eliminating pollution from traffic, bicycles can now charge your cell phone with a new system devised by Nokia. The cycle powered cell phone battery charger is suitable for any Nokia phone with a 2mm charger jack, and it uses a dynamo to generate electricity from the movement of the wheels as cyclists pedal along.

"Bicycles are the most widespread means of transportation in many markets around the world, so this is just one more benefit to be gained from an activity people are already doing," said Alex Lambeek, Vice President at Nokia.

To begin charging, the cyclist needs to travel around four miles per hour. Charging times will vary depending on battery models and pedaling speeds. A brisk ten minute ride would generate nearly 30 minutes of cell phone talking time or up to 25-30 of standby idle time. Available in Nokia stores and on the firm's Internet site by the end of the year, the charger kit should sell for under $20, according to estimates from a Nokia spokesman.
